At our Christmas Charity Dinner this year, LSESU HKPASS were extremely fortunate to have featured Mr. Paul Shieh SC, Chairman of the Hong Kong BAR Association, as one of our honorary speakers.
Mr Shieh talked about the importance of the rule of law and his confidence in our generation's ability to safeguard its survival far beyond 2047.
Amongst other things he pointed to the importance of a balanced, rational perspective of the Umbrella Movement, and how as chairman of the Bar he had braved a wide range of criticism across the political spectrum, to expose the fallacies that both pro-establishment and pan-democratic figures have utilised in arguing for their cause.
At the opening of the legal year on 12 January 2015, in Mr Shieh's final speech of his 2-year tenure as chairman, he laid out a phenomenally rational, comprehensive and rhetorically powerful speech on recent events. We warmly encourage you to read his tour de force that will surely give food for thought no matter your political preferences.
