Mr. Geoffrey Ma on the Rule of Law in Changing Times

February 24, 2015

In our first flagship lecture this week, we welcome the Chief Justice of Hong Kong Mr Geoffrey Ma GBM SC to speak on the Rule of Law in Changing Times. A phenomenal, phenomenal turnout from universities across London and elsewhere - thank you so much!

Some memorable quotes before the official video is released later this month:

On the perceived fragility of the rule of law: "The rule of law is not harmed when some people break laws. It is harmed when most of the population, knowing clearly what it is, do not respect both its content and its spirit."

On judicial activism: "The Courts do not exist to provide political solutions to political problems, but to resolve legal problems that may arise from political disputes... There is nothing wrong with the perceived reinterpretations by judges such as Lord Denning - in fact it is often admirable - because they aren't applying concepts alien to the law. They are in fact applying the law to produce more equitable principles."
