Chinese New Year Riots

February 8, 2016

A crackdown on street hawkers in Mong Kok on the Chinese New Year Day by Food and Environmental Health Officers was turned into violent confrontations between protestors and riot police. Two gunshots were allegedly fired while several spots in Sai Yeung Choi Street South area were scarred with bin fires.

Over the course of the last two years we have seen intensifying hostility between the law enforcers and citizens in Hong Kong. It is with a deep and concerned heart that we share some information on the incident. As overseas students from Hong Kong, there is undoubtedly little we can do to achieve immediate effects. However, we believe by observing and reflecting on what is happening in the city, we learn and progress, endeavouring to safeguard virtues and values we have long held dear to.
